Making Your Remodel Easier

Tips For Designing A Senior Apartment At Home

For many families, seniors moving into the home is a major undertaking. In fact, some people design entire apartments at their homes to handle Mom or Dad moving in. If you are thinking about building an apartment for your loved one, you have options. Hiring an architect is a great way to get started, but these tips will also help you learn more.

Consider Rounded Corners

Seniors may not have the same mobility they once did. As a result, they may find themselves in situations where rounded corners allow for a smoother transition in direction -- and no stubbed toes is a plus too. These corners may be more suitable for individuals who use wheelchairs or walkers to get around as well.

Consider Senior Safety

If you have a loved who may be prone to wandering, perhaps as a result of dementia, you may be worried about an apartment space with doors leading to busy streets. You can work with an architect to design a home that does not allow for such easy entry and exit to the outside world. Perhaps you want the entrance and exit to connect to your main home, for example.

Consider Window Choices

If your loved one wants to open windows and enjoy a light breeze or some sunlight inside, he or she will need access to windows that open easily. Many people find awning windows or those with hand cranks to be easy to use.

Consider Designing a Smart Home

Today, many architects are well-acquainted with using smart technology. Smart technology can be used to control the temperature, lighting, and even the home's security features. If you already know that you want these features, you can discuss with your architect if there are ways you can make the house as accessible as possible.

Consider Railings

Now is also a great time to consider where you want to install grab bars, railings, and other fixtures. You may want to have them built directly into the home rather than to install them on your own later.

Consider Working with a Professional

It is always important to consider the manner in which your loved one is going to interact with his or her living space. For seniors, this can be quite different from the way younger people with no mobility issues might interact with their living situation. For this reason, working with architect services is a great way to explore your options.

About Me

Making Your Remodel Easier

Years ago, my wife and I had our home remodeled and experienced a lot of difficulties. We didn't plan as well as we should have, and we ended up changing our minds quite a bit and causing a lot of delays and extra costs. We were also trying to live in the house during the remodel, which made life pretty stressful for us, and probably for our contractors, too. When we decided that we were going remodel again this year, I wanted things to be different. I took what I learned from all of the things that went wrong the last time, and set about doing things differently this time. The results were amazing. We're so much happier with this remodel. I decided to put what I learned about smooth home remodeling into a blog so that others could learn from our mistakes and successes.
